Ericsberg Castle

To be privately owned

Ericsberg Castle, an impressive Baroque castle near Katrineholm in Sweden, is perched on a small hill overlooking Kårtorpssjön. This four-winged structure, lacking an inner courtyard, is characterized by its three stories and a central main building, complemented by a southern terrace featuring a fountain.

History+

The site's origins date back to the Middle Ages when it was known as Pintorp and belonged to Knut Nilsson of Bosgård. In 1508, the estate passed to the Gyllenstierna family. Erik Karlsson Gyllenstierna (1602–1657), a Swedish Privy Councillor, began construction of the castle, which would later bear his name, in 1650. After his death, his wife Beata von Yxkull (1618–1667) and their son Kristoffer Gyllenstierna (1639–1705) continued the work. Although no written evidence exists, Nicodemus Tessin d. Ä. is attributed with involvement in its completion. Following the extinction of the Gyllenstierna line in 1733, the estate was sold to Florentina Hildebrand. During the 18th century, the castle gradually fell into disrepair until David Gotthard Hildebrand sold it to the Bonde family in 1791. They began restoring and beautifying the castle from 1812 onwards. Around 1850, orangery buildings were added, and in 1896-97, architect Isak Gustaf Clason restored the corps de logis. Between 1895 and 1905, the castle garden was expanded, including the creation of a lime hedge maze.
