Eriksholm Castle
Eriksholm Castle is a historic estate in Denmark, characterized by a long history and elegant architecture. Located in the Sjælland region, near Holbæk, the current structure presents itself as a work of the late 18th century, resting on the foundations of older structures and remaining in private ownership to this day.
History+
The origins of Eriksholm date back to the 14th century, when Peder Jensen was recorded as the first known owner of the estate. Between 1536 and 1556, and again from 1573 to 1585, the property was in royal hands. In 1600, Erik Madsen Vasspyd acquired the estate and had a castle built on the walls of a predecessor structure. Admiral Niels Juel exchanged Sæbygaard for Eriksholm in 1682, and his descendants held the castle until 1752. Hans Diderik de Brinck-Seidelin subsequently acquired it, and his son, also Hans Diderik de Brinck-Seidelin, inherited it in 1778. He commissioned the architect Caspar Frederik Harsdorff to build the present castle, which was completed in 1788. In 1878, Eriksholm passed to Frederik Ahlefeldt-Laurvig and was later inherited by his son, the Foreign Minister William Ahlefeldt-Laurvig. The castle remains in family ownership to this day.
