Eringerfeld Castle

The origins of the current castle date back to a fire in 1660 that destroyed an older complex. Subsequently, the canons Johann Gottfried and Rhabanus Christoph von Hörde commissioned the new construction. Between 1676 and 1699, the Baroque castle was built under the direction of architect Ambrosius von Oelde and master builder Jobst Scheck. After the death of Franz Lodolf Joseph von Hörde in 1781, ownership passed to the Decken and Ketteler families. In 1906, the diplomat Wilhelm Freiherr von Ketteler was born here. During the National Socialist era, Dutch missionaries were forcibly quartered.
