Northwest of the town center of Dörfles, a district of the market town of Ernstbrunn in Lower Austria, Ernstbrunn Castle is situated amidst a forest. The elongated complex with four courtyards rises on the northern slope of the Semmelberg and shows a blend of medieval defensiveness, Baroque, and Classicist elegance.

History+

The first documented mention of a Heinrich de Ernstbrunne dates back to around 1180. In 1254, Ebran von Ernstbrunne was beheaded after opposing King Ottokar. The dominion passed to Ulrich von Maissau in 1313 and later, around 1430, to the sovereign, who pledged it to the Doss family. From 1499 to 1556, the Lords of Ebersdorf were the owners, before Leonhard von Harrach sold the dominion to Joachim von Sinzendorf in 1592. His son Lorenz founded the Ernstbrunn line of the family. Rudolf Graf von Sinzendorf undertook extensive Baroque alterations and new constructions after 1654.
