Erwitte Castle
Erwitte Castle is located in Erwitte, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Erwitte Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1273. The current moated castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century for Jobst von Landsberg zu Erwitte in the immediate vicinity of the previous buildings. The Counts of Landsberg-Velen and Gemen became owners of the castle in the 19th century and sold it to the National Socialist state in 1934. The state used it as a Reich training castle for the German Labor Front and the NSDAP. During this time, extensive renovations of the castle took place under the direction of the architect Julius Schulte-Frohlinde. In addition, a number of outbuildings were erected.
After the Second World War, a garrison and an orphanage were housed on the premises. The city of Erwitte bought the castle in 1976. Later, the owner of Haus Füchten, Manfred Green, acquired it to use it as a hotel since 1999. In 2006, the Feuerhahn family acquired the castle and developed the hotel into a 4-star hotel.
Architecture+
The moated castle was built in the Renaissance style. At its northeastern corner, there is a three-story corner tower. The entrance portal is located in the middle of the building. Influences of the Weser Renaissance are noticeable on the west side through the bay window projections with decorative gables. The grand staircase of the Baroque portal on the west front was in the axis of a chestnut avenue, which was cut down in 1965 and replaced by a lime avenue. The construction measures carried out in the 1930s, on the other hand, largely followed the principles of National Socialist architecture.
