Escheberg Castle (Zierenberg)
Escheberg Castle in Zierenberg, Hesse, is an estate that once served as a manor and country house, and was likely a moated castle. The current Biedermeier complex, which took its present form in the 19th century, is known for the literary, musical, and artistic circles hosted there in the 19th century by Karl Otto von der Malsburg.
History+
Around 1530, a half-timbered main building with bay windows was constructed. The estate complex, including an administration building, barn, stables, and farm buildings, was built in 1740 to the north of the manor house. In the 18th century, the half-timbered building was remodeled, with only the upper floor and the gable wall on the narrow side remaining. The east wing of the complex was extended with a chapel in 1752, above whose entrance is a coat of arms of the von der Malsburg family. The main facade was redesigned in 1789, expanding the window axes from five to seven.
