Essling Castle
Essling Castle is located in the Essling district in the 22nd Vienna municipal district of Donaustadt at Esslinger Hauptstraße 81-87.
According to a document from 1287, the area was a fief of the Lords of Eslarn. The property passed to Baron von Teufel in 1579. In an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1672, the castle is depicted as a new building. The property passed to the Kinsky family in 1722, after which a renovation and expansion took place. Then, in 1760, the castle belonged to Francis Stephen of Lorraine and passed to the Habsburg family fund in 1797. During the battles of the Battle of Aspern in 1809, the castle was severely damaged and subsequently restored. From 1988 to 1991, the castle was adapted and restored.
Castle+
The building is a simple, eaves-facing structure in a row formation. The elongated two-story building has a simple structure with cornices and panels, the central axes are emphasized with gables. On the ground floor are baroque barrel vaults with lunettes.
Granary+
The granary is located northwest of the castle on the former back road and was restored in 1991. It was occupied by French troops in the Battle of Aspern and was fiercely contested. It is a mighty freestanding three-story building under a gable roof from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. On the gable wall is a mural of a reaper. Inside, the wooden pillar construction with the granary floors has been preserved.
The granary is managed by the Special Museum Aspern Essling 1809 as an external branch to depict the Battle of Aspern.
