Esteburg Castle in Jork-Moorende, located in northern Lower Saxony, was originally conceived as a late Renaissance moated castle. Although its size and function are more akin to a manor house, the designation as a castle has been established for centuries and continues to shape its identity.

History+

The construction of Esteburg Castle began in 1607. The foundation work on the marshy, peaty soil proved so complex that the costs for the foundations equaled those of the building itself. After its completion in 1611, the builder Diederich Schulte is said to have destroyed the invoices to conceal the immense expenses from his descendants. The castle, built on an island surrounded by moats near the Este river, served as a residence for the Schulte burgmann family, who also resided at Horneburg and Sittensen Castle. The manor house underwent several alterations; the current portal with warrior statues and an inscription plaque dates from 1722.
