On the Ettersberg ridge, north of Weimar in Thuringia, lies Ettersburg Castle. As part of the “Classical Weimar” ensemble, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998 and is today used as a hotel and restaurant.

History+

Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar had Ettersburg Castle built between 1706 and 1712 as a simple, three-winged structure. In 1722, the three-story New Castle was added. His nephew Ernst August commissioned renovations and added a grand staircase between 1728 and 1740. Duchess Mother Anna Amalia used the castle as a summer residence from 1776 to 1780, where a circle of artists and literati, including Goethe and Schiller, gathered.
