Eugensberg Castle (Salenstein)
Eugensberg Castle in Salenstein, Canton Thurgau, is a remarkable Neoclassical building on the southern shore of Lake Untersee. Named after its builder Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson, it impresses with its magnificent architecture and extensive English landscape garden.
History+
Eugène de Beauharnais, once Viceroy of Italy, acquired the Sandegg estate in 1819 to create a suitable building site for his new castle. Eugensberg Castle was built between 1819 and 1821, but he visited it only a few times before his death in 1824. His daughter Eugénie, later Princess of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, inherited the property and used it as a summer residence before selling it in 1834. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and underwent extensive renovations and extensions in the Empire style, notably in the 20th century under industrialist Hippolyt Saurer. Later, it briefly served as a museum and a convalescent home before becoming private property and receiving further structural additions.
