Eutin Castle

The origins of Eutin Castle date back to the 12th century when Bishop Gerold of Oldenburg had a court built here. Between 1260 and 1275, under Bishop Johannes von Tralau, it was expanded into a stone building. Over the centuries, particularly after repeated conflicts between the Bishops of Lübeck and the city of Lübeck, the complex was expanded and fortified multiple times. From 1586, the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf assumed the prince-bishopric, and the castle served as their residence. After a fire in 1689 and partial destruction by Danish troops in 1705, it was rebuilt and underwent a Baroque transformation in the 18th century under Rudolph Matthias Dallin. In 1773, Eutin became the summer residence of the Dukes of Oldenburg. In the 19th century, the interiors were redecorated in a Neoclassical style, and an additional floor was added. Until 1918, it was the summer residence of the ducal family. After World War II, it briefly served as a refugee camp before being extensively renovated in the 1990s and opened to the public.

Eutin Castle is located in the town of Eutin in the district of Ostholstein, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 32 m above sea level.

Today, Eutin Castle houses a museum and can be visited. The largely preserved interior offers insights into courtly culture from the late Baroque to Neoclassicism.
