Euxinograd Castle
Euxinograd Palace, a former summer residence of Bulgarian tsars, is on the Black Sea coast. Located near the port city of Varna, it is renowned for its architecture and park grounds.
History+
The palace's origins trace back to 1880, when Bulgarian Prince Alexander Battenberg I visited the Varna region. He decided to build a summer residence on the ruins of the "Saint Dimitar" monastery. This residence, initially named "Sandrowo," was later renamed Euxinograd. The current name, meaning "City on the Black Sea," was introduced in 1893 by Princess Marie Louise. The complex was built in the Neo-Baroque style according to plans by Austrian architect Viktor Rumpelmayer. Later, the state acquired the residence and gifted it to King Ferdinand I. A part of the estate is the wine cellar, established in 1891 for the royal family.
