History+

The origins of Evenburg date back to the 1630s, when Colonel Erhard Reichsfreiherr von Ehrentreuter von Hofrieth, commander of the Dutch garrison in Emden, had the first buildings constructed. He named the estate after his wife, Eva Freiin von Ungnad. He had received the feudal rights for Loga and Logabirum from Count Ulrich II of East Frisia. Later, Marie von Ehrentreuter, the builder's daughter, married Gustav Wilhelm Freiherr von Wedel, who served as Field Marshal to the Danish King and Governor of the Oldenburg region. In 1861, the originally classical structure, which was in need of repair, was largely demolished and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style according to plans by architect Richard Stüve.
