Fachsenfeld Castle

Fachsenfeld Castle is a castle built in the 16th century in the Fachsenfeld district of Aalen in the Ostalbkreis.

Since the beginning of the 15th century, the Barons of Woellwarth-Laubach are documented as owners of Fachsenfeld and the village of Waiblingen, which today belongs to Fachsenfeld. Georg Siegmund von Woellwarth had a larger building, a farmhouse, built in Fachsenfeld in 1540, which his son Hans Siegmund von Woellwarth had expanded into a castle. During the Thirty Years' War, Kaspar von Woellwarth lost the castle in 1634 to the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Johann Kaspar von Stadion, but he regained it four years later. On Christmas 1699, the castle burned down. At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate passed into the possession of Karl von Varnbüler, who sold it in 1827 to Wilhelm von König-Warthausen. In 1828, under Wilhelm von König-Warthausen, a neoclassical country house was built, to which a belvedere was added in 1839. The current park was also created under the König-Fachsenfeld family. Around 1900, an expansion of the library and gallery was carried out according to plans by André Lambert. In 1982, Baron Reinhard von König-Fachsenfeld founded a foundation for the preservation of the castle and the park. Today, the castle houses the collections of Reinhard von König-Fachsenfeld and a museum.
