Farmach Castle

The earliest references to the Farmach estate can be found in a document from 1272. In 1339, a Jans von Farmach is mentioned. It is believed that the Lords of Alm took over the farm and expanded it into a castle. In 1567, the castle was owned by Helena von der Alm, wife of Baron Georg von Toerring. Hans Zehentner, Toerring's administrator, acquired the castle in 1599 and was allowed to call himself “von Farmach” from 1614. After about 130 years in the possession of the Zehentner family, Franz Raimund von Rehlingen bought the castle in 1737 and began renovations in 1760, which remained unfinished before his death in 1770. In 1785, the estate passed to the farmer Bartlmä Schwaiger, who built an extension for livestock and an inn. In 1822, the Imperial and Royal Treasury acquired the castle to house the district court, later the regional court, and the tax office for the Saalfelden area.
