Feldeck Castle

Feldeck Castle was built in the High Middle Ages by Hersfeld Abbey to protect its possessions in Dorndorf. It was a sister castle to Krayenburg and was initially administered by the Dynasts of Frankenstein, who passed it on to Buchonian ministerials, the knights Dietzel and Johann von Taft. In 1330, the castle was sold to the Counts of Henneberg. Later castellans included Werner and Wetzilo von Bennhausen (1376) and Georg von Buchenau (1423). The Buchenau family separated from the Hennebergs after disputes and switched allegiance to the Landgraves of Thuringia. Consequently, the Hennebergs granted the castle to the knight von Prasser in 1487 and to the Lords of Wechmar in 1506. In the early 16th century, it was entrusted to Rudolph von Boyneburgk. During the Peasants' War in 1525, Feldeck Castle was surrendered without a fight. In 1622, Melchior Rudolf von Boyneburgk sold the castle to Hans Melchior von Buttlar.
