In the Brandenburgian town of Finsterwalde is Finsterwalde Castle, a Renaissance complex. It is divided into a front and a rear castle, each with its own courtyards.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, with a “Dominus Heinemanus de Vynsterwalde” mentioned as lord of the castle as early as 1282. In the 14th and early 15th centuries, the complex is said to have served as a robber knight's lair. Between the 15th century and 1625, ownership passed through the hands of the Maltitz, Minckwitz, and Dieskau families. The Dieskau family, who owned the castle from 1533, shaped the current appearance of the complex through renovations and expansions.
