In the eastern Fischbach district of Eisenach is Fischbach Castle, a half-timbered building. Originally emerging from a monastic estate, it developed into a ducal residence and later into an inn, with its history dating back to the 13th century.

History+

The village of Fischbach, first mentioned in 1269, once belonged to the Nikolaikloster in Eisenach. In the 13th century, the wooden spur castle Malittenburg was built nearby. A monastic manor formed the origin of the later castle. In 1613, Duke Johann Ernst acquired the property and gifted it to his wife Christine in 1614. She commissioned master builder Hans Weber to convert it into a castle in the late Renaissance style. A half-timbered floor was added to the stone ground floor, along with a stair tower and a side wing.
