Forstleithen Castle

The former hunting lodge was built for Margravine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth in the 1 8th century on the foundations of a predecessor building already mentioned in 1591.

From Hunting Lodge to Palace

Originally conceived as a modest hunting lodge, the building was transformed into a magnificent palace under Margravine Wilhelmine. She personally oversaw the design and furnishing of the palace, which served as her summer residence and a place for artistic and intellectual exchange.

The Old Palace is a prime example of Rococo architecture, characterized by its playful elegance and rich ornamentation.

Facade and Exterior

The facade is adorned with delicate stucco work, allegorical figures, and decorative elements that reflect the Rococo style. The light color of the building, combined with the golden accents, creates a harmonious and inviting appearance.

Interior Design

Inside, visitors are greeted by a series of sumptuously decorated rooms, including the famous Music Room, the Chinese Cabinet, and the Mirror Room. Each room is a masterpiece of Rococo art, featuring intricate frescoes, valuable tapestries, and exquisite furniture.

Surrounding the palace are extensive gardens that were also designed in the Rococo style.

Baroque Garden Elements

The gardens feature geometrically arranged flowerbeds, ornate fountains, and sculptures that complement the palace's architecture. A special highlight is the grotto, an artificial cave decorated with shells and crystals, which served as a cool retreat during hot summer days.

Later Additions

In the 19th century, parts of the garden were redesigned in the English landscape style, adding a more natural and picturesque element to the overall composition.

Today, the Hermitage Old Palace is a museum open to the public, offering insights into the life and times of Margravine Wilhelmine and the Rococo era.
