Frankenberg Castle

The origins of today's Frankenberg Castle date back a long time. On the plateau of the Herrschaftsberg, there were once two castle complexes: Hinterfrankenberg Castle and Vorderfrankenberg Castle. The latter is the predecessor of the current castle. The older Hinterfrankenberg Castle was owned by the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. In the course of territorial conflicts, the Burgraves of Nuremberg erected a new castle, also named Frankenberg, in close proximity in 1254. The ownership of both castles was complicated and subject to change for a long time. Only after secularization were they united under one owner. During the Margrave War in 1554, Hinterfrankenberg Castle was devastated by Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades and has been a ruin ever since. Today's Frankenberg Castle was acquired in 1520 by Ulrich von Hutten, who financed it with compensation payments.
