Frankenstein Castle

First mentioned in a document in 1193, the castle was the predecessor of today's palace. In the 14th century, Frankenstein belonged to the dominion of Rheinegg. In 1368, it is mentioned as a court. It is presumed that it belonged to the Schenken von Osterwitz at that time, as they also owned Rheinegg as a ducal fief.

After the Osterwitz family died out, Frankenstein passed to the Lords of Rauber, who attached it to their neighboring dominion of Obertrixen. Already in the years 1572 to 1589, the castle was owned by the Reinwald family. The current Renaissance palace was probably built by Wolf Dietrich Reinwald. His granddaughter Maria Sofia Freiin Reinwald von Frankenstein brought it into her marriage with Georg Christof II von Himmelberg.

Since the Himmelberg family also died out in the male line in the next generation, Maria Regina von Himmelberg, who was married to Adam Seyfried Graf Grottenegg, inherited the dominion. She sold Frankenstein to the Ramschüssel family. Franz Raimund Freiherr von Ramschüssel had the complex expanded and a large farm built. In 1718, Paris-Ignaz Freiherr von Ramschüssel died. He was followed by the Freiherren von Schluga.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was burned down by Napoleonic troops and rebuilt in 1797. In the 19th and 20th centuries, mostly peasant owners predominated, but they often owned the estate for only a few years. In 1838, for example, it was auctioned to Agnes Novak. In 1902, Franz Schmid von Schmidsfelsen briefly owned the property. Since 1958, Heinz Gfrerer has been the owner of Frankenstein.
