Frauenprießnitz Castle
The History of Frauenpriessnitz Castle+
In April 1144, Frauenpriessnitz was first mentioned in a document. Frauenpriessnitz takes its name from a Cistercian nunnery. This suffered heavy damage in the Peasants' War in 1525 and was used as a quarry for the construction of a castle from 1602 to 1605. The castle, church, and village were razed to the ground in 1638 during the Thirty Years' War. The Elector of Saxony had the inherited ruin rebuilt as a Renaissance castle and established a domain. Only the main building of the castle, which housed a Machine-Tractor Station (MTS), escaped the demolition measures in 1948 due to Order 209 of the SMAD. Everything else - including the beautiful Renaissance-style domain building - was removed, causing the complex to lose its special character.
