Frauenstein Castle

The earliest mention of a Gundachir de Fovnstaine can be found in a document from the Counts of Heunburg dating back to 1195. His grandson Albert died in 1267, and in 1283, a Heidenricus de Vrowenstaine is documented. The Frauenstein family died out in 1376 with Hans von Frauenstein, who served as burgrave of Kraig. His daughter married Hans Färber, and after his early death, his brother Heintzel. Heinrich Färber was enfeoffed with a tower in Frauenstein in 1413. Through the marriage of Agnes Färber to Andrä Welzer in 1504, the castle came into the possession of the Welzer family, who contributed to its expansion. Christoph Welzer and his wife Agnes completed a new construction in 1519, the still-existing three-story east wing with a round tower and oriel.
