Frauental Castle

The origins of Frauental Castle date back to the mid-16th century, when it was transformed into a noble residence in 1542 by Gall von Racknitz. The castle underwent an expansion in 1675 under Ferdinand Graf Zehentner, who commissioned Jakob Schmerlaib for the reconstruction, giving the castle its present appearance. The castle is presumed to stand on the site of the "Nidrinhof," first documented in 970, a complex said to have been founded around 700 AD from Aquileia. This court, also called "Udulenidvor," served as a bilingual administrative center and was granted by Emperor Otto I to Archbishop Friedrich of Salzburg in 970. After the expansion of Deutschlandsberg Castle, the Nidrinhof lost its importance before being developed into the current castle. Restoration work took place between 1969 and 1970.
