Fredensborg Castle

In the north of the Danish island of Zealand lies Fredensborg Palace, an example of Nordic Baroque. It was built in the early 18th century and now serves as one of the residences of the Danish royal family, who inhabit it especially in spring and autumn.
History+
The construction of Fredensborg Palace took place between 1720 and 1722 under the patronage of Frederick IV. The Italian-style building was designed by Johan Cornelius Krieger. Its name, 'Peace Palace', commemorates the end of the Great Northern War and the subsequent peace treaty between Denmark and Sweden. Around 1760, the palace park was designed by Nicolas-Henri Jardin, extending to the shores of Lake Esrum.
