Frederiksberg Palace

The palace's origins trace back to 1699, when King Frederick IV commissioned the construction of a small summer palace on the site of a former manor. Initially, a compact building in the Italian palazzo style emerged, with its central section completed in 1703. Between 1708 and 1709, Johan Conrad Ernst oversaw an expansion and addition of floors, giving the palace a broad H-shaped footprint and integrating a palace chapel, among other features. King Christian VI had the palace expanded by Laurids de Thurah from 1733 to 1738 into an enclosed Baroque residence with an arcaded courtyard. In the 18th century, the palace was adorned with elaborate stucco decorations and numerous artworks, before some interiors were redesigned in the Neoclassical style around 1770. After a period of less frequent use by the royal family in the 19th century and its use as a hospital during the German-Danish War from 1864, the palace was handed over to the Military Academy in 1869.

Frederiksberg Palace is located in Copenhagen, in the Frederiksberg district, within the Hovedstaden capital region of Denmark. It stands at an elevation of approximately 29 meters above sea level.

Today, Frederiksberg Palace continues to serve as the seat of the Military Academy of the Danish Armed Forces. The interiors are therefore only accessible during rare guided tours or by prior group appointment, while the palace chapel is regularly open to visitors. The palace grounds themselves and the surrounding Frederiksberg Have are freely accessible at all times.
