The construction of the castle likely took place towards the end of the 12th century. The builders were vassals of the Stubenberger family, who owned the castle as free property and also named themselves after it.

In 1218, the brothers Ulrich and Reinher von Freiberg are mentioned in documents. The Freibergers are repeatedly mentioned until the last quarter of the 14th century. During the Wallsee Feud, in which the Freibergers participated on the side of the Stubenberger, their castle was destroyed. The family soon died out, and the Stubenberger seized the ownerless castle and granted it to the Stadler family, who were also among their retinue. They rebuilt the residence towards the end of the 15th century. Georg Stadler completed the expansion in 1522.

However, the new castle is not located on the site of the old fortified building but about 80 m south of it. The former castle site now served as a vineyard. Since no member of the Stadl family was Catholic anymore in 1635, Freiberg passed to the Barons and brothers Ott Gottfried and Ferdinand Erasmus von Kollonitsch. Around 1638, the castle was largely expanded to its current form by Ott Gottfried. In 1724, the Viennese Prince-Archbishop Cardinal Count Siegmund Kollonitsch inherited the dominion. Around 1747, he initiated the modernization and expansion of the castle complex. The Cardinal's nephew, Ladislaus Zaj von Zaynberg, not only took over Freiberg in 1747 but also adopted the name Kollonitsch. The Counts Kollonitsch von Kollograd owned the dominion until their extinction in 1874. After that, the owners changed quite rapidly.

In 1928, the last thorough restoration of the castle took place. Especially in the period after the Second World War, the building was severely neglected and fell into disrepair. Professor Dr. Fischer began with renovation work, but his untimely death prevented its restoration. In 1976, the innkeeper Walter Haibel took over the castle. He and his co-owner, Erich Mohringer, continued the restoration in small steps. Until the end of 2006, a restaurant was housed in the vaulted rooms of the ground floor. The interiors are used for events of all kinds.
