In the Hollfeld district of Freienfels on the Wiesent River, Freienfels Castle is a structure whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Its location on a “free rock” once gave it a position as an immediate imperial estate.

History+

The origins of Freienfels Castle date back to around 1300, with one tradition naming Knight Otto von Aufseß as its builder. Another source suggests an even earlier origin around 1280. The complex was first documented in 1342. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was destroyed but rebuilt by Knight Pankraz von Aufseß. During the Thirty Years' War, it changed hands several times and was alternately occupied by Swedish and Bamberg troops. After family disputes of the von Aufseß family, the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg took possession of the castle in 1672.
