Freizell Castle

The first documented mention of Freizell dates back to 1443, when it was under the feudal lordship of Passau. Originally owned by Ulrich von Starhemberg, the castle later passed to the Lords of Marsbach. In the 16th century, Freizell was among the fiefs of the Counts of Neuhaus, and in the 17th century, it belonged to the Tattenbach family. In 1659, the castle was the scene of a robbery murder of Johann Christoph Freiherr von Tattenbach. In the 19th century, the small castle increasingly fell into disrepair and served as a hiding place for valuables of the local population during the war years.
