Friedeburg Castle is located in Saxony-Anhalt. Originally a fortified complex, it was transformed into a stately castle and continues to shape the landscape of the region.

History+

The origins of the complex date back to the 12th century when Friedeburg Castle was built. The first documented mention of the locality as "Vredeberch" dates to 1183. In 1442, the Counts of Mansfeld acquired dominion over Friedeburg and Salzmünde. The castle underwent transformation from 1540 onwards, when it came into the possession of Peter Ernst I von Mansfeld, the Governor of Luxembourg, who had it converted into a palace. The Mansfeld family owned the castle until 1780.
