Die Anfänge
In 1183, the community was first mentioned in a document as Vredeberch. The castle was built in the 12th century. In 1442, the Counts of Mansfeld bought Friedeburg and Salzmünde for 4000 Schock Meissen groschen. In 1540, the castle and office then fell to the Governor of Luxembourg, Peter Ernst I von Mansfeld. He had the castle converted into a palace. Friedeburg remained in the possession of this family until 1780. As their vassals and liege lords, the von Steuben family resided in Friedeburg from 1262 to 1721 and on the Gerbstedt manor from 1442 to 1738. The palace fell into disrepair after 1630 and was extended and rebuilt in the 19th century. In 1945, the owners were expropriated and expelled by the communists.
