Friedewald Castle, a Renaissance structure, is situated in the municipality of the same name in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is a striking example of German Mannerist princely castles.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the Counts of Sayn consolidated their rule in the High Westerwald and Daadetal in the 14th century. As early as 1324, Friedewald was granted town rights, secured by Count Gottfried von Sayn. Around 1580, Count Heinrich von Sayn had the medieval castle converted into a Renaissance palace. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle served as a refuge for the county. From 1671, it was the main seat of the Imperial County of Sayn-Altenkirchen until 1791.
