In the Upper Palatinate town of Vohenstrauß in Bavaria, Friedrichsburg Castle, a Renaissance castle, stands as a landmark. With its four round corner towers and a central entrance tower on the north side, it shapes the townscape.

History+

The construction of Friedrichsburg took place between 1586 and 1593 under Count Palatine Friedrich, who also gave the castle its name. He originally planned to expand his residence in Weiden, but after this project failed, he decided on Vohenstrauß. Master builder Leonhardt Greineisen directed the project, while the masonry work was initially carried out by Hanss Reicholt and, after his death in 1589, by the Italian master mason Hans Meria. After its completion, Count Palatine Friedrich and his wife Katharina-Sophia moved into the castle in 1593. His death in 1597 made the castle a widow's residence for Katharina-Sophia until her demise in 1608.
