Fuchsmühl Castle, an ensemble consisting of the castle building, the manor house, a chapel, an economic courtyard, and a landscaped park, is located in the municipality of Fuchsmühl in the Tirschenreuth district of Bavaria. It lies on the eastern edge of the Steinwald forest in the Upper Palatinate and dates back to the 12th century.

History+

In the 14th century, the present-day Fuchsmühl Castle was documented as the knight's and feudal estate of Fossenmühl, named after its then-owners, the Lords of Fossenhofen. In 1363, Hans Heckel is mentioned as the owner, who sold the estate to Landgrave Johann I of Leuchtenberg in 1394. It later passed as a fief to Knight Konz von Wirsberg, followed by the Lords of Trautenberg. During the Thirty Years' War, the Trautenberg family abandoned the estate. Johann Philipp Cratz von Scharffenstein, a commander in Bavarian service who defected to the Swedes and was executed in 1635, was also briefly an owner. He was followed by Colonel Kaspar Snetter, before the Trautenberg family again owned the castle until 1657.
