Fürstenberg Castle

The construction of the castle took place between 1741 and 1752, commissioned by Duke Adolf Friedrich III of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. It was intended as a widow's residence for his wife, Dorothea Sophie. The construction was overseen by court architect Christoph Julius Löwe. For its construction, existing mills on the island had to be removed in 1741 and rebuilt elsewhere. By 1750, most of the castle was completed, allowing parts of the ducal retinue to move in. After her husband's death in 1752, Dorothea Sophie resided in the castle until her passing in 1765. Subsequently, it served as a residence for retired ducal officials. Following a fire at the town church in 1807, church services were held in the castle hall for 41 years. In 1910, the town of Fürstenberg acquired the property.
