Castle Fürstenberg

The origins of Fürstenberg Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a tower castle was built on the “Vorstenberch”. Its strategic location served to secure a military road and the Weser border against Brunsburg and Höxter. Around 1300, the castle came into the possession of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and was first documented in 1355. Later, in 1382, it belonged to Duke Otto I of Brunswick-Göttingen. A legend, handed down by Johannes Letzner, connects the castle in the early Middle Ages with the County of Dassel. Around 1600, Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel had the fortifications converted into a hunting lodge in the Weser Renaissance style. It also served as an administrative seat for the princely lands.
