In Fürstenwalde/Spree in Brandenburg is Fürstenwalde Castle, a former hunting lodge. Originally built for Frederick I, its history led it from a princely hunting lodge to a granary and ultimately to a vacant monument.

History+

The castle was built between 1699 and 1700 on behalf of Frederick I. The court architect Martin Grünberg, who also worked on Grunewald Hunting Lodge, supervised the construction. In addition to the main building, a fishing lodge, an avenue, a carp pond, and a pleasure garden were also created. It was intended to serve as a base for hunts and visits to the estates in Golzow. After the death of Frederick I in 1713, the castle fell into disrepair and was temporarily vacant. Following a city fire, the city administration used the building to house homeless citizens, and a workshop was established there. From 1736, a garrison commander also resided there.
