Fürstenwalde Castle

The Fürstenwalde Hunting Lodge is a former hunting residence in the city of Fürstenwalde/Spree. The lodge, located near the Spree river, was built for Frederick I.

Frederick I had the lodge built between 1699 and 1700 by the then court architect Martin Grünberg. He was also entrusted with the renovation of the Grunewald Hunting Lodge, among other projects. In addition to the lodge itself, various outbuildings such as a fishing hut, an avenue, a carp pond, and a pleasure garden were created. It was intended for hunting and as a starting point for visits to the estates in Golzow.

To what extent the lodge was actually used for these purposes is not known.

After the death of Frederick I in 1713, the lodge fell into disrepair and was temporarily vacant. After a city fire, the city administration, at its own discretion, housed homeless citizens there. A workshop also emerged during this time. In 1736, a garrison commander additionally set up his residence there.

In 1750, the city was prohibited from this illegal use, and the lodge was converted into a grain storage facility for the military at the behest of Frederick II.

For this purpose, an intermediate floor and sheds were added, and unsuitable elements such as the grand staircase and the pleasure garden were removed.

In 1795, another nearby storage facility was built. After the Second World War until 1993, the lodge served as a warehouse.

Today, the listed lodge is privately owned and stands empty.

On the occasion of Fürstenwalde's application for the State Garden Show 2013, a renovation of the building was discussed but has since been rejected.
