Fürstlich Drehna Castle

The moated castle Fürstlich Drehna, located near an old Slavic castle complex in the Niederlausitzer Landrücken Nature Park, has its origins in the 13th century. In 1521, the town of Drehna was taken over by the von Minckwitz family. In 1550, they had the moat around the castle dug and the defensive towers erected. In 1697, ownership passed to the von Promnitz family. They had the castle complex expanded in Baroque style in 1753. Count Moritz von Lynar, who was elevated to the rank of prince in 1807, renamed the town and the castle 'Fürstlich Drehna'. In 1877, the Bremen shipping family Wätjen became the lords of the castle. The family had a family tomb laid out in the castle park. In 1945, the owners were expropriated by the communists, and the castle was used as a youth workhouse during GDR times.

Today, the castle and the approximately 50-hectare landscape park belong to Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH.
