History+

The origins of Gaasbeek Castle date back to around 1240 when the first fortification was erected. At the beginning of the 16th century, renovations took place, resulting in the current castle being built upon the foundations of the original stronghold. In 1565, the Count of Egmont acquired the estate along with feudal rights over 17 surrounding villages. Just three years later, Count of Egmont was executed for high treason on the orders of Philip II of Spain.
