Gadow Castle

The von Moellendorff family owned Gadow and other estates in the Prignitz as early as the 13th and 14th centuries. Although the village of Gadow became deserted in the 14th century, a knight's seat developed here in the 15th century. No medieval structures remain today. Around 1790, Hans Georg Gottlob von Moellendorff had a two-story late Baroque residential building constructed with a high basement and a mansard roof, and established the garden grounds. Between 1804 and 1816, Gadow belonged to Field Marshal Wichard Joachim Heinrich von Moellendorff. His adopted son Hugo von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff inherited the property. Hugo's father, Daniel Theodor von Wilamowitz, added two wings to the Baroque building in 1818 and created the curved entrance ramp.
