In the Swedish city of Gävle stands Gävle Castle. Originally conceived as a church castle, it now serves as a private residence.
History+
The construction of Gävle Castle began in 1583 under the patronage of John III, who commissioned a church castle, with a sacred space forming its central part. The building, overseen by the Belgian architect Willem Boy, was completed in 1597 and was characterized by pointed towers, typical of many Vasa castles. Following a period of decay, a modernization took place between 1650 and 1660, after which the castle served as the seat of the provincial administration. A major fire in 1727 destroyed the entire top floor. This led to a reconstruction and renovation by architect Carl Hårleman, who gave the castle a French Neoclassical style. In 1754, a provincial governor was able to move into the redesigned building.
