Gävle Castle
Gävle Castle is a historic structure located in the Swedish city of Gävle. Originally conceived as a church castle, it combines architectural history with a central location on the Gavleån river and now serves as a private residence.
History+
The construction of Gävle Castle began in 1583 under the patronage of John III, who commissioned a so-called church castle, with a sacred space forming its central part. The building, overseen by the Belgian architect Willem Boy, was completed in 1597 and was characterized by pointed towers, typical of many Vasa castles. Following a period of decay, a comprehensive modernization took place between 1650 and 1660, after which the castle served as the seat of the provincial administration. A devastating major fire in 1727 destroyed the entire top floor. This led to a reconstruction and renovation by architect Carl Hårleman, who gave the castle a French Neoclassical style. In 1754, a provincial governor was finally able to move into the redesigned building.
