Gailenbach Castle

In 1592, Zacharias Geizkofler, an Augsburg patrician and later Imperial Treasurer, acquired the Gailenbach fief. In the same year, he began constructing a small castle, which included an armory and gardens. His son Ferdinand Geizkofler sold the property in 1622 to the merchant Matthias Koch. The Koch family expanded the castle with a manor farm in the same century and remained owners for generations. After the death of Markus Christoph Koch von Gailenbach without male heirs, the castle passed to his sister Susanna Helena and her son Johann Christoph Sigmund. The latter had the castle rebuilt in 1816/17, altering the roof and gardens, among other things. After the death of Johann Benedikt von Paris without male descendants in 1838, the castle changed hands and eventually came into the possession of the patrician family von Stetten, who had it restored in 1955/56.
