Gamehl Castle

The history of the Gamehl estate dates back to 1387, when it passed into the possession of the von Stralendorff family. The original manor house was demolished in the early 19th century. In its place, Franz von Stralendorff (1805–1883) had the current castle built in 1860. The design for the Neo-Gothic building came from the Wismar architect Heinrich Thormann. Franz von Stralendorff, ducal Mecklenburg chamberlain and district administrator, was a central figure in the region. The castle remained in family ownership until 1945, when the last lord of the castle, Joachim von Stralendorff, was dispossessed.
