A historic noble residence, Gamlitz Castle, is situated in Gamlitz in the Leibnitz district of Styria, Austria. It is the only preserved estate of its kind in the region since the 16th century and today is a hotel and restaurant.

History+

The origins of Gamlitz Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it was constructed between 1111 and 1131 in the Gamlitzbach valley. Through a donation from the Count of Sponheim, it came into the possession of St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal. In the 15th century, it was owned by the Seidl or Sadl family of Gamlitz. Subsequently, ownership changed hands multiple times, including a knight of Herzenskraft in the 16th century and, around 1630, Georg Klingendrath, a prominent iron merchant and mayor of Graz.
