Garath Castle

The first documented mention of the estate occurred at the end of the 13th century. It served as a knight's seat, among others for the Garderode family. At the end of the 14th century, it passed into the possession of the Knights of Kalkum. The old castle was built between the 16th and 18th centuries under the Lords of Velbrück, who also had the gate tower, which is still preserved today, constructed. In the 18th century, Nicolas de Pigage, known for Benrath Palace, designed the castle park. After the Velbrücks, the Barons of Kylmann became owners, before the castle passed to the Barons Raitz von Frentz through marriage at the beginning of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the old castle, with the exception of the gate tower, was demolished after Albert von Burgsdorff acquired the estate. He had the current Garath Castle rebuilt in 1912 and 1913.
