Garvensburg Castle

Garvensburg is a castle built in the Historicism style in Züschen, a district of Fritzlar in the Schwalm-Eder district of northern Hesse.

The castle was built from 1894 to 1898 by the industrialist Wilhelm Garvens, who was ennobled in 1908 and subsequently called himself Wilhelm von Garvens. He built a hunting lodge in the late Gründerzeit style, a castle-like villa, surrounded by an English garden. Remains of a former castle of the Lords of Meysenbug, who owned property in Züschen until the early 19th century and whose male line died out in 1810 with the death of Heinrich von Meysenbug, were integrated into the complex. On the east side of the castle are four coats of arms of the Meysenbug family from the years 1500 to 1600.

The castle remained in the possession of the Garvens family until the 1970s. Since then, it has housed a hotel and restaurant, as well as an advertising agency and a consulting firm.

Viewers of Hessischer Rundfunk voted Garvensburg Castle in April 2012 as the 7th most beautiful castle in Hesse out of a total of 43 castles.
