Gavnø Castle

To be privately owned

Gavnø Castle, an impressive Rococo castle, stands on the island of the same name near Næstved in southern Zealand, Denmark. It is known for its rich history, ranging from a medieval castle to a nunnery, and today houses a variety of attractions, including a significant art collection and extensive gardens.

History+

The origins of the site date back a long way: even under King Valdemar II, there was a fortified complex on the island. In 1402, Margaret I founded a Dominican convent called St. Agnes there. The present castle was built between 1755 and 1758 on the site of this former monastery. A stone bridge, spanning the Suså River and providing access to the castle, was constructed after the Baltic Sea flood of 1872, replacing the original wooden bridge from 1766. The castle chapel, originally part of the monastery, was extensively restored in 1913 and preserves an altar featuring the 64 coats of arms of the ancestors of Admiral Niels Trolle and his wife Helle Rosenkrantz.

Gavnø Castle is situated on an island in the Suså River, southeast of the city of Næstved in the Næstved district, Sjælland (Zealand) region in Denmark, at an elevation of approximately 17 meters above sea level.
