Gehrden Castle

The origins of the estate date back to 1142, when Benedictine nuns, who had been expelled from Iburg, founded a monastery here. This occurred on property donated by Heinrich von Gehrden, east of the then villages of Nord- and Südgehrden. The Romanesque monastery church, completed around 1180, is the only surviving building from this early period, as the remaining monastery buildings were replaced by more modern structures in the 17th century. A door in the north portal of the church dates from around 1200.
