Gemünden Castle is a castle complex in the Hunsrück region, situated on a ridge approximately 30 meters high above the Simmerbach valley, shaping the townscape of Gemünden.

History+

The origins of today's Gemünden Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a castle stood on the same site, first documented in 1301. This complex was initially owned by the Counts of Sponheim, who later enfeoffed it to the Lords of Koppenstein and Schenk von Schmidtburg. In 1514, the Schenk von Schmidtburg family fully acquired the castle from the Sponheim heirs.
