Gevelinghausen Castle

The first documented mention of Gevelinghausen Castle dates back to 1299, when it was owned by the Knights of Gevelinghausen. In that year, the Count of Arnsberg exchanged the Gevelinghausen manor with the Meschede Abbey for the Ostwig manor. From 1371, the estate was fortified. A castle chapel, already existing in 1543, was rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1796, Baron von Wendt-Papenhausen acquired the castle, which later, in 1872, became the birthplace of Conrad Baron von Wendt. The poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff spent time as a guest at the castle in 1824 and 1831. For economic reasons, the von Wendt family sold their property in 1985.
