The origins of Gimborn Castle date back to 1273 when it was pledged by the Count of Berg to the Count of Mark. From 1631, it established itself as the residence of the County of Gimborn-Neustadt under the House of Schwarzenberg. Ownership changed hands, including the Count of Wallmoden-Gimborn, the Count of Meerveldt, and Count Cajus von Stolberg zu Stolberg. Since 1874, the estate has been owned by the Barons of Fürstenberg zu Gimborn.
